Susana Baca

Susana Baca grew up with music: "I didn't learn music", she insists; "it was already part of my world before I was born." With her soft, deep, vibrant voice, she sings the little-known history of Africans brought to Peru as slaves. Deeply involved in the struggle against racism, she has made it her mission to create a bridge between the culture of Peru's Black population and their ancestors, founding an institute to study and explore the African roots of so many Peruvians. Self-taught, she sings both traditional and modern songs, her performances enhanced by both dance and poetry. She's become one of the spearheads of David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Energetic but gentle, Baca defines her role as artist with mystical humility: "My voice transmits what I have received from the eternal song of others".
